The expanded web layout is actually much more powerful than it looks at first. You can set up as many columns as you would like to for things such as 'direct messages' 'lists' or the 'profile directory.' Simply click the small 'slider' box at the top right and select 'pin' or 'unpin' and then you can use the arrow keys to move positions. See the attached screenshot!

And remember, to get this view, just go to 'preferences' and select 'enable advanced web interface'!!!

If you find it useful, it would be most helpful if you could help contribute to the ongoing fundraiser to help with server costs, labor, moderation, and tending. $5 a month for instance,,,, suggested but not at all required to maintain a place here...

This place can be an evolving place at all times. Maybe we can experiment with different ideas, say if someone wants to host a formal critique salon. The beauty of this software is that if things grow and people want to form different groups, it is possible to make a new separate network, and people can flow between the spaces as needed. (this is the 'federated' stuff you see options for all around...). For now it is totally a place for all these different uses, and we can together monitor how it feels and what organizational steps are required to make it useful, especially if it ends up growing....

as much as i like these different worlds it may be becoming rather apparent that it needs to be a bit more transparent in the styling not so garish because we want the discussion and work to take front and center. nicely functional with perhaps accents rather than an immersive environment where people take a back seat!

i have a new work i wanted to workshop with you all

The Speakeasy – A Neo-Bardic Space
The Speakeasy – a community space. I needed the feeling of a supportive family at my back when creating larger works and wanted to make a space where people can come to help out each other, share their work for critique or feedback, and in general feel like there is a space of work that's mostly free from structures, financial goals, contests, residency, or any industry schemes. In fact I'd love for one of its uses to include sharing stories and advice for people getting living wages, getting work out there, brainstorming new ways that bypass the old (or include them but from an altered toolbased sphere of ideas etc.;;;;;;;;;;; If you want to relax, come here. Ofer help, music, suggestions of personnel, make connections, share ideas or feedback.

Make it a space for people outside all industry gatekeepers. A speakeasy, a cafe, a nurturing space of creative people and friendsship.

A space to relax and offer gentle feedback,

General notes on the software and interface!!

The Speakeasy is running Mastodon, which is open source social networking software. Its feel is somewhere between Twitter, a chat room, and Facebook. Maybe not an ideal platform in some ways, but the best we have in the open source software world currently!

– when you make your profile in ‘settings’, be sure and check ‘list your profile in the directory’ so we can all know you’re here!

– you can change to the sexy dark theme in settings

– you may want to experiment with the ‘expanded web layout’ which displays in four columns and looks pretty neat.

– if you want to target a post to only a few specific people, you can list their usernames, and change the post type (the globe in the box) to ‘direct’. this will send the post as a direct message to everyone and they can reply. If you wanted to ask, say 5 people for a critique circle, you can specify them here and it will start what is essentially a group chat between them.

– host salons, performances or critiques or small gatherings within each other’s homes once the pandemic environment is safer

– digital events and gatherings, say a play reading, a show and tell, zoom cabaret & critique session, etc.

– remember everything posted here is only visible to the people who are in this very small network .

you can click on ‘profile directory’ on the right and see exactly who all is taking part of this project.

if you click on a post it will make it bigger to read.

– if you want to use this space on your phone, search ‘mastodon’ on the app store, and any of the options that come up will let you access the site with a variety of different interface chocies!

– in ‘4 column mode’ if you click the menu bar at the top left it will take you back to the menu with notifications DMs etc.

– don’t worry about any ‘federated’ stuff you see – this is to connect to other servers of this social networking app. we may need to use it eventually if we gain over about 50 or so users???? investigate

– posts are sent in real time so this is a kind of a chat interface as well.

Posting your work!!

– unfortunately the server we’re on now isn’t equipped to host big files.

if you’d like to show your work currently, unfortunately using an outside source like youtube or vimeo etc. is how to do it.

The Speakeasy – a community space. An underground social network where creators of all disciplines and levels professional or hobbyist can share work, receive critique from a trusted community, and discuss ideas for building new arts infrastructures, what has worked, what hasn’t.

Some ways you might find this space helpful:

There are no leaders or hierarchy, and it’s not a club. Just a space to dip in and out of. It’s there to feel like you have a supportive family ‘at your back’ to take some of the solitary nature out of creating, especially with larger or long term projects. At the outset it is much more a ‘chill out coffee shop or bar’ vibe than a structured feedback program, although there might be room in the future to host events, official critique circles, or meetups, concerts etc.

It’s for professionals working on projects and professionally minded hobbyists, looking for serious critique, support and feedback. Any kind of trolling or hate speech etc. will not be tolerated.

It’s also a place to share ideas postmortems and thoughts about regenerative business models for artists, both for the pandemic and for the wider timeline of general industrial degeneration. Ways to keep the line between artist and experiencer as clean as possible, avoiding gatekeepers, contests, hierarchical control & capitalist industry structures. Ways you have found that use existing structures to work for you. Basically, how to be a career artist and get your work to the people who want and need it. And to work towards receiving enough resources to live without too much compromising of your work and home life. If traditional routes such publishers, labels, and arts organizations have worked for you, a place to share thoughts and help others by explaining how these structures help you make your art.

A support network for hitting road blocks, frustrations, self care sharing, ‘oh wow i fucked up real bad’ moments and general places for vulnerability, empathy, and communal assistance and networking.

A place to give your wisdom and to receive from others.

A place to connect artists for projects – recommendations for actors, tech crew, instrumentalists, producers, etc.

This space may need to split into various subcommunities based on server use, too much clutter in the feed, etc.

THIS COMMUNITY – SPECIFIC SOFTWARE QUIRKS ETC.

It is my thought to begin this as an enclosed 3 month session, and it can be evaulated for strengths and weaknesses, and we can collectively discuss the next iteration or community idea etc.
